So many high achievers know this kind of dynamic all too well. I remember when I was in middle school, the mother of a fellow classmate would call me on the phone to help her do her son's homework for him. As a shy kid, I would indulge the kid's mother. After all, she was older than me. Thankfully, this was someone who didn't trust her own kid to finish his work, and it never got to the point of plagiarism.
Still, it was the first time (and, sadly, not the last) where I would be entrusted to essentially hold a classmate's hand through every math problem. So it's hard not to empathize with this author's struggles. However, both students are old enough now to be more independent. If they were in middle school, maybe it would be harder to establish these boundaries. But now, they're on their own, and the author might be learning a valuable lesson here in drawing a line when it's necessary.
